We are going to have a look at what Ohm\u2019s law is and how it applies to the electrical world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firstly, let\u2019s look at the 3 key components that form an electrical circuit. They are Voltage, Current and Resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ll be using an analogy of water flowing in a hosepipe to describe what each part is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Voltage:<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"441\" height=\"412\" class=\"wp-image-687\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/the-regs.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/word-image.png?resize=441%2C412&#038;ssl=1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/the-regs.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/word-image.png?w=441&amp;ssl=1 441w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/the-regs.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/word-image.png?resize=300%2C280&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px\" \/> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">A good way to think of voltage is as pressure. The pressure in a hosepipe is what drives the water through the pipe. If you increase the pressure and you\u2019ll increase the flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like the pressure drives water along the pipe the Voltage drives the current through a circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symbol for Voltage is V and it\u2019s measured in Volts which has the unit symbol V.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Current: <\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"441\" height=\"376\" class=\"wp-image-688\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/the-regs.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/word-image-1.png?resize=441%2C376&#038;ssl=1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/the-regs.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/word-image-1.png?w=441&amp;ssl=1 441w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/the-regs.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/word-image-1.png?resize=300%2C256&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px\" \/> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To put it simply, it\u2019s the \u2018stuff\u2019 that\u2019s flowing. In the case of the hosepipe it would be the water \u2018which is made up of billions of molecules\u2019 that are driven around by the pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an electric circuit, the \u2018stuff\u2019 would be the current \u2018which is made up of billions of electrons\u2019 being driven around the circuit by the Voltage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symbol for current is I and it\u2019s measured in Amps with the symbol A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Resistance: <\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"418\" height=\"383\" class=\"wp-image-689\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/the-regs.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/word-image-2.png?resize=418%2C383&#038;ssl=1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/the-regs.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/word-image-2.png?w=418&amp;ssl=1 418w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/the-regs.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/word-image-2.png?resize=300%2C275&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Partially blocking the end of the hosepipe with your thumb would reduce the amount of water flowing through the pipe. Your thumb is in effect \u2018resisting\u2019 the pressure and reducing the flow of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an electrical circuit, a piece of equipment such as a lamp or heater would have the same effect of resisting the voltage and would reduce the amount of current flowing in a circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symbol for resistance is R and is measured in ohms, symbol \u2126 \u2018omega\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, remember the Voltage is the force \/ pressure driving the Current around the circuit and Resistance is a force that restrict the flow of current.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as important as being familiar with the key components of an electrical circuit we need also to be familiar with all the units of measurement and the symbols used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"751\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the 1820s Georg Ohm discovered that there is a proportional relationship between Current, Voltage and Resistance in an electrical circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which basically means that If you know the value of any two key components in an electrical circuit you can calculate the third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Ohm\u2019s Law Triangle<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>V for voltage at the top: <br>I for current at the bottom left<br>R for Resistance at the bottom right. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like with all formula triangles if you know the value of any two components you can calculate the third using this Ohm\u2019s Law Triangle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, to use the ohm\u2019s law triangle\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cover V to calculate voltage: V = I x R: To calculate current, cover I so it\u2019s I = V \u00f7 R and to calculate resistance, cover R so it\u2019s R = V \u00f7 I<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>To calculate Voltage using the Ohm\u2019s Law triangle: <\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 1 \u2013 Refer to your triangle<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 2 \u2013 Cover the value which we are trying to calculate \u2018V\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 3 \u2013 This leaves us with I and R at the bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Values at the bottom of the triangle are multiplied together to calculate the top value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>V = I x R : Voltage = Current x Resistance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>To calculate Current using the Ohm\u2019s Law triangle: <\/em><\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 1 \u2013 Refer to your triangle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 2 \u2013 Cover the value which we are trying to calculate \u2018I\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 3 \u2013 This leaves us with V at the top and R at the bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Values at the top of the triangle are divided by the remaining value at the bottom of the triangle<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I = V over R \u2018I = V \u00f7 R\u2019. Current = Voltage \u00f7 Resistance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>To calculate Resistance using the Ohm\u2019s Law triangle:<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 1 \u2013 Refer to your triangle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 2 \u2013 Cover the value which we are trying to calculate \u2018R\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 3 \u2013 This leaves us with V at the top and I at the bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a id=\"post-686-_Hlk491853921\"><\/a> Values at the top of the triangle are divided by the remaining value at the bottom of the triangle<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>R = V over I \u2018R = V \u00f7 I\u2019. Resistance = Voltage \u00f7 Current<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Ohm\u2019s Law Applications\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we have seen there are three key components to an electrical circuit.
