Everything Electricians Need to Know
Published: June 2026
The publication of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, commonly known as Amendment 4 of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, represents the latest evolution of the UK’s national standard for electrical installations.
As electrical technology continues to develop at a rapid pace, the Wiring Regulations must also evolve to ensure that installations remain safe, compliant and suitable for modern electrical systems. Amendment 4 introduces several important changes that reflect today’s growing use of battery storage, digital infrastructure and smart building technologies.
Whether you’re an electrician, electrical contractor, inspector, designer or someone preparing for the City & Guilds 2382 examination, understanding Amendment 4 will soon become essential.
Why Has Amendment 4 Been Introduced?
BS 7671 is regularly updated to reflect advances in technology, improvements in safety and changes to both British and international standards.
Electrical installations today are very different from those designed only a few years ago. Renewable energy systems, battery storage, electric vehicles, smart buildings and digital communication networks are now commonplace.
Amendment 4 has been developed to ensure the Wiring Regulations continue to provide appropriate guidance for these emerging technologies while maintaining the highest standards of electrical safety.
The Biggest Changes in Amendment 4
Although there are numerous amendments throughout the Regulations, several stand out as particularly significant.
New Chapter for Stationary Secondary Batteries
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are becoming increasingly common in both domestic and commercial installations.
Until now, guidance has been spread across several sections and manufacturer recommendations. Amendment 4 introduces a dedicated chapter covering the installation, protection, isolation, ventilation and verification of stationary battery storage systems.
This is particularly important for electricians installing:
- Solar PV battery storage
- Stand-alone home batteries
- Commercial energy storage systems
- Backup power installations
New Requirements for Power over Ethernet (PoE)
Power over Ethernet has grown rapidly in recent years.
Modern buildings increasingly power devices such as:
- LED lighting
- CCTV systems
- Wireless access points
- Access control
- Building management systems
through Ethernet cabling.
Amendment 4 introduces dedicated requirements for PoE installations, helping ensure cable sizing, thermal effects and installation methods remain safe as power levels continue to increase.
Functional Earthing for ICT Systems
As commercial buildings become increasingly reliant upon information technology, communication networks and data systems, Amendment 4 introduces a completely new section dealing with functional earthing and functional equipotential bonding.
Unlike protective earthing, functional earthing is intended to ensure reliable operation of sensitive electronic equipment by reducing electromagnetic interference and improving system performance.
Major Changes to Medical Locations
Electrical installations within healthcare environments have always required additional levels of protection.
Amendment 4 substantially revises Section 710 covering Medical Locations, including updated requirements for testing and documentation.
Although these changes primarily affect specialist contractors, they represent an important update for anyone involved in healthcare installations.
What Does Amendment 4 Mean for Electricians?
For most electricians working in domestic, commercial and industrial installations, many day-to-day activities will remain familiar.
However, anyone involved in:
- Inspection and testing
- Electrical design
- Solar PV
- Battery storage
- EV charging
- Commercial installations
- Smart buildings
- Data infrastructure
should become familiar with the updated requirements as soon as possible.
Remaining current with BS 7671 is not simply good practice—it forms an essential part of demonstrating professional competence.
When Does Amendment 4 Apply?
Amendment 4 was officially published on 15 April 2026.
A six-month transition period allows industry time to update procedures, documentation and training. The previous consolidated version remains valid during this transition, before being withdrawn on 15 October 2026.
Do I Need to Take Another 18th Edition Exam?
This is one of the questions we’re asked most often.
The answer depends upon your circumstances.
If you’ve already achieved the City & Guilds 2382 qualification, you may not necessarily need to sit another examination immediately. However, you do need to ensure your knowledge remains up to date and that you’re working to the current edition of BS 7671 whenever applicable.
Many electricians choose to complete an Amendment 4 update course rather than wait until the changes become mandatory.
Preparing for Amendment 4
The best way to prepare is to:
- Obtain the new Orange Book (BS 7671:2018+A4:2026)
- Understand the new sections and revised chapters
- Review how the changes affect your everyday work
- Complete structured Amendment 4 training
- Practise with realistic exam-style questions if you’re planning to take the City & Guilds qualification
Keeping your knowledge current will help you remain compliant, improve confidence on site and demonstrate continued professional development.
