Part 5 of BS7671 covers about seventy pages, has 6 Chapters and forms approximately 23% or 14 questions of your final exam, as such it should be regarded as vital reading.

Chapter 51: Common Rules

As it says, these are rules which apply to all electrical installations concerning proper functioning for safety, use and environment.
The use of British Standard equipment, identification of conductors and labelling all fall within this Chapter.

Chapter 52: Selection and Erection of Wiring Systems

Anything that is part of or relates to the wiring of an electrical installation is here.

Chapter 53: Protection, Isolation, Switching, Control and Monitoring

This is all about turning things off for multiple reasons. ie. Under fault conditions – ‘protection’, maintenance, emergency or in genral use. With a brief section on monitoring at the end of Chapter.

Chapter 54: Earthing Arrangements and Protective Conductors

Anything to do with earthing is here. Main earth, circuit protective conductors, main bonding, supplementary bonding. Includes sizes, calcs and tables and what can and can’t be used.

Chapter 55: Other Equipment

If you’re looking for any regulations regarding any electrical equipment or accessories from generators, transformer or from lights, water heaters etc to street furniture it’s here. Hence the name 🙂

Chapter 56: Safety Services

Anything and everything regarding the feeds supplies and sources of safety services.
