Hi, the easier way when doing your exam is to break the book ‘BS7671’ down…
Ignore the first bit of the book it’s just faff and filler, your questions will start at Part 1.
Part 1:
Ch 11 – What BS761 applies to and what it doesn’t apply to and things to consider
Ch 12 – The objectives of BS7671
Ch 13 – Basic principles for electrical installation without the technical details these are in Parts 3 to 7
Part 2: It’s a big dictionary of common terms and phrases
Part 3: (things you would need to consider if you were designing/installing from scratch)
Ch 31 – What’s it for, how it supplied and how’s it laid out
Ch 32 – Environmental conditions ie wet, warm etc
Ch 33 – Any parts of the installation/equipment that may have a detrimental effect upon other parts.
Ch 34 – Need to and how it’s maintained throughout it’s life
Ch 35 – Any safety services – fire alarms to supply etc
Ch 36 – Is there anything you don’t want to go off, pop or bang
Part 4: Is all about what you need to do with regards to safety within an electrical installation
Ch 41 – Electric shock
Ch 42 – Heat, smoke and fire
Ch 43 – Overcurrent / overload
Ch 44 – Overvoltage / undervoltage
Part 5: Deals with the actual physical parts / equipment forming the electrical installation
Ch 51 – Labels and conductor colours
Ch 52 – Just the wiring and any parts of the wiring ie junction boxes
Ch 53 – Turning things off (protection, isolation, use etc) and if you can’t turn it off monitor it
Ch 54 – Earths
Ch 55 – ‘ALL’ other equipment
Ch 56 – Safety services – fire alarm feeds, UPS etc
Part 6: Inspection & Testing of electrical installations
Ch 61 – First checks on new circuits, additions and alterations
Ch 62 – Existing installations
Ch 63 – the certificates and reports used
Part 7: Special installations or locations
Section 701 – 753 Areas or environments where there exists an increased risk of electric shock. Usually due to wet conditions or things may get knocked about a bit.
From Bathrooms to Fairgrounds. Easier to reference and there’s a common theme that runs through ie IP4X but IPX5 water jets 30mA RCD 415.1.1 where people are closest and 300mA for supplies and fire protection.
Appendices: (The last half of the book with only 5 Questions!)
1 to 16 with 11 and 12 empty. It’s supplementary or additional information. Appendices 3, 4, and 5 probably the most useful.
My advice is don’t spend too much time revising here it’s an uneconomical use of your time.
There you go an in a nut shell what’s it all about…
(Full list of content is on page 3) and don’t forget Table of Tables on pages 435 and 436.
