I know I probably need to get out more, but here’s ten reasons I like the 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations ‘BS7671:2008+A3:2015’.
- Although it’s a non statutory document BS7671 provides guidance on ensuring the safety of all electrical installations here in the UK, assisting you to comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations.
- The layout of the 17th Edition makes sense. It flows from what it covers, why and the basic standards that all electrical installations should attain. It then expands upon that with Safety, Equipment Selection, Inspection & Testing and also additional considerations for areas or installations where there is an increased risk of electric shock ‘Special Locations’.
- Table of Contents on page 3
- Table of Figures on page 461
- Table of Tables on page 465
- Regulation 522.6.202 ‘cables in a wall < 50mm from the surface’ has been re-written and easier to understand.
- Table 4D5 on page 364 specifically for Twin and Earth and 3 Core and Earth PVC/PVC cable.
- The introduction of the Cmin factor of 0.95 to allow for fluctuation of voltage.
- Symbols used in the book are on page 38 – 39. Abbreviations see page 40 – 41
- Although at least one third of the book will not apply to the type of electrical work you may be doing you still need to be aware of it’s implications and applications for the purpose of the City & Guilds 17th Edition exam. So remember the flow of the exam follows the flow of the book – cover to cover.
