C & G 2382 exam – It’s not so daunting…

BS7671
BS7671 – 17th Edition

I’m often asked by students, “where sould I concentrate my efforts when studying for my final City & Guilds 2382 exam”.

If the 2 hour 60 question 2382 exam seems a little too daunting just break it down. It’s all a matter of scale. There are 7 Parts and ’16’ Appendices (some are empty) within BS 7671. That’s approximately 464 fun filled pages. Here’s how your copy of BS7671 breaks down for the final G&G 2382 exam.

  • Part 1 has 4 questions – 7%
  • Part 2 has 2 questions – 3%
  • Part 3 has 6 questions – 10%
  • Part 4 has 15 questions – 25%
  • Part 5 has 14 questions – 23%
  • Part 6 has 4 questions – 7%
  • Part 7 has 10 questions -17%
  • Appendices has 5 questions – 8%

Parts 4 and 5 form 50% of your final 2382 exam. Part 7 forms 17%. The passmark for the exam is 60% – this is deceptively low ‘remember they are not giving this award away’ and you realistically should be aiming for at least 80%  ‘go for 100%’ to be sure of a passing mark.

If you go to page 3 of BS7671 you will see the Table of Contents. Note: Part 1 one starts on page 13 and the Appendices start on page 276 and end at page 432!

What this means is that 55 of the 60 questions on your final exam are within the first half of the book ‘give or take a page or two’, and the last 5 questions are taken from the last ‘half’ of the book.

Concentrate on the first half – Parts 1 to 7 especially Parts 4 and 5. Part 7: Special Installations and Locations – is one of the easier to reference areas of BS7671 with 10 questions and I have found that candidates normally get around 3 – 5 questions just on ‘Bathrooms – Section 701’.

So to summarise…

City and Guilds 2382 is an open book using BS7671 – 2 hour multiple choice exam
BS7671 has 464 pages – 55 of your questions (92%) will cover pages 13 to 275. And 5 questions (8%) will cover pages 276 to 432.

Hopefully this doesn’t seem as daunting and shows you where to focus your efforts.
