3 Routes to Becoming an Approved Domestic Installer…

To become an approved domestic electrical installer who can self-certify their own work you will need to be a member of a Competent Person’s Scheme.

Published in 2020 and in effect from September 2021 the IET Electrotechnical Assessment Specification sets out the minimum requirements to be met by an electrician and or company in order to be recognised by a Competent Person’s Scheme (NICEIC, Napit etc).

The company will need to appoint an individual as a Qualified Supervisor who will be responsible for the safety, technical standards and the quality of the electrical work undertaken by the company. If you are a one-man band looking to become a member of a Competent Person’s Scheme, then you will be the Qualified Supervisor.

Since September 2021 Appendix 4B of the IET Electrotechnical Assessment Specification sets out the minimum technical competency requirements of a company’s Qualified Supervisor based upon the type of electrical work undertaken by the company.

For domestic installation work only, there are three routes to becoming a Qualified Supervisor and you must have one of the following or their equivalent.

  1. Level 3 certificate in installing, testing and ensuing compliance with electrical installations in dwellings. e.g., EAL Level 3 Certificate in Installing, Testing and Ensuring Compliance of Electrical Installations in Dwellings. 600/7695/1
  2. Industry-approved apprenticeship with recognised historical industry qualifications and / or certificates of competence.
  3. Mature candidate assessment via the Recognition of Prior Experience and Learning (RPEL). E.g., EAL 5982 Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification

In addition, if they are not included in any of the above routes / awards, a Qualified Supervisor will also be required to have…

  • Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations: BS7671 (as amended)
  • Level 3 Award in the Initial Verification of Electrical Installations
  • Level 3 Award in the Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations. * If the company will be carrying out Electrical Installation Condition Reporting.
